Before Christmas break, I was able to talk to a third grade class about the importance of volunteering and how easy it can be!
I began by speaking to the class about the Miss America Opportunity, and a simple description of what a Community Service Initiative is. From there, I explained to them why I am so passionate about volunteering, and was able to share stories from when I was their age to hopefully inspire them to volunteer outside the classroom. These kids were so excited about volunteering, and they truly impressed me how passionate they were about helping one another.
Before we got started, I told them where these holiday cards would be headed- a nursing home. Some of the kids even had family in the nursing home these cards were going to, which made them more excited! I explained what a nursing home was, and what it means to the residents to get a holiday card from the kids. This activity showed the kids that volunteering can be done wherever you are! Making a card is simple and fun, which inspired some of them to continue making cards for nursing homes, soldiers over seas, etc, outside of the classroom!
This activity is super simple! All I needed to buy and bring was an abundance of paper, coloring materials and stickers. I separated the materials into bins so I could easily give every table group materials, and it also made cleanup super easy! The class was super respectful of my materials so I can reuse the coloring tools at my next classroom visit!
As I read through the cards they wrote, it made my heart warm seeing all the sweet messages they wrote, along with the colorful drawings. I was so excited to pass these out to the residents of the nursing home, I knew these cards would make these resident beyond happy!
I recommend doing this activity, whether it is just you making a card, or getting a group of people together. This activity is amazing for people of all ages, and it is a super easy way to make someones day.
I hope this inspires you to do an act of kindness today!
xoxo,
