Remember the holiday cards I made with a third grade class? Well I was able to hand deliver them! A week after making the cards with the sweet third grade class, I visited a local nursing home to spread a little holiday cheer.
Going into the nursing home, I honestly did not know the reactions I would receive regarding the cards. However, seeing the reactions to receiving these cards was eye opening, and taught me a lot about senior citizens and nursing homes.
While going room to room handing out cards, I met one lady who stopped me to tell me she loved my shoes! We had a somewhat lengthy conversation before I handed her a holiday card. When she opened it up, her eyes began watering, and she was overcome with happiness. She told me this card meant the world to her, and she doesn’t receive cards like this one that often. Her reaction was something I will never forget, it made me so happy I had made someone else extremely happy.
As I continued passing out the cards, I met a couple other ladies who began sharing past stories and wisdom. One of these ladies was so appreciative I was just talking to her! She valued our conversation so much, and I valued it just as much. Having all these conversations with the residents filled my heart, and inspired me to continue visiting nursing homes, even if it means just going in to talk, play games, or watch TV with the residents!
By visiting one time, I had learned so much, and it brought me so much joy that I continue going back. I definitely recommend just visiting, even if it is just 20 minutes, because you will leave with you heart filled with love, and a new perspective on life.
xoxo,
